The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
